Cats are very independent, but when they are not feeling well, they need our help and care. Understanding when your cat isn’t feeling well and knowing the signs are vital and can save your cat’s life. Read on to find out more about the signs of a sick cat from your Cumming, GA vet. 

Changes in Behavior and Appearance 

If your cat starts changing their behavior patterns, this could be a sign that they aren’t feeling their best. This must not be dismissed, especially if cats start to hide more than usual. Your cat may try to cover up their illness and they may do this by not socializing as much. 

Additionally, your cat’s appearance may change if they are not feeling well. Changes in appearance could include an oily coat, matted hair, or hair loss. Your cat may also hold their head and tail differently, which could mean they are sick. 

Appetite  

Turning down food, especially their favorite food, is unusual for your cat. Although your cat may only sometimes want to eat, repeatedly avoiding food might mean something is wrong.  

If your cat displays this behavior, something may be happening with their stomach or mouth. Tell your veterinarian about this behavior, especially if it lasts more than 24 hours. An emergency vet visit may also be necessary if your cat is also not drinking.  

Becoming Vocal 

Cats are quiet animals, so an increase in sounds is unusual. If your cat begins to meow or vocalize more and more, it could be that they are trying to tell you something or express their discomfort.  

Although an increase in vocalization could be nothing to worry about (it could be your cat is excited about a new environment, person, or toy), it is still a change in your cat’s behavior and should be monitored.
